General thoracic surgeon, Dr. Madhuri Rao, explains that, as with any major surgery,
lung cancer surgery carries some
potential risks. The type of surgery, a person's overall health, and any preexisting conditions can influence these risks. Possible complications may include bleeding, infection such as pneumonia, temporary breathing difficulties, heart rhythm changes, or, less commonly, blood clots. These issues are seen more often in people with existing heart or lung problems. Dr. Rao emphasizes that surgeons take careful steps before and during surgery to reduce risks. For most people who are medically fit, serious complications are uncommon.
