Expert Video - What can I do to prepare for lung surgery and improve my recovery afterward?

Associate Professor of Surgery, Dr. Madhuri Rao, from the University of Minnesota, shares how patients can prepare for lung surgery and improve recovery afterward. Quitting smoking or vaping at least three to four weeks before surgery is one of the most important steps. She also recommends staying active with walking and exercise, eating a healthy diet with plenty of protein, and avoiding alcohol and junk food. Using a breathing tool called an incentive spirometer helps strengthen the lungs. Dr. Rao also highlights prehabilitation programs, which can improve strength before surgery. After surgery, pain control, daily movement, breathing exercises, and support from rehabilitation programs all help recovery.
