Dr. Madhuri Rao, a general thoracic surgeon, explains that
surgery can sometimes
cure lung cancer, but there is always a chance the cancer could come back. The risk of
recurrence depends on the type, size, and stage of the tumor. For very
early-stage non-small cell lung cancer, the chance of cancer returning after surgery, sometimes combined with chemotherapy or immunotherapy, is very low. However, the risk is higher with larger tumors, lymph node involvement, or if all the cancer cannot be completely removed.
Small cell lung cancer also has a greater chance of coming back. Surgery alone or in combination with other treatments still offers the possibility of a cure, and care teams create personalized treatment plans.
