Expert Video - Will I need additional treatments before or after lung cancer surgery?

Dr. Madhuri Rao, an associate professor of surgery at the University of Minnesota, explains that some patients may need additional treatments before or after lung cancer surgery, depending on the stage of the disease and their overall health. Treatments given before surgery, called neoadjuvant therapy, can include chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy. These treatments are used to shrink the tumor and increase the chances that surgery will be successful. After surgery, patients may receive adjuvant therapy, which may involve the same types of treatments, to help lower the risk of the cancer returning. These decisions are personalized to each individual, with the goal of improving long-term outcomes and providing the best chance for disease control.
